Texas DPS Ramps Up DWI Patrols for Holiday Season

The holiday season has long been a troubling time for law enforcement officers throughout the country. Each year during the holidays, drunk driving causes thousands of preventable accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Last year in Texas, DPS troopers made over 1,200 DWI arrests during the Christmas and New Years' Holidays. This year, officials are increasing DWI enforcement and patrols.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, increased DWI enforcement will span a 21-day period from December, 13 through January, 2. This time of year is historically yields the highest amount of drunk driving related crashes, often as a result of holiday parties and get-togethers.

Officials will increase the amount of officers on the road and will focus on DWI saturation patrols in high-risk areas. They are urging residents throughout the state to designate a sober driver or to arrange rides when drinking alcohol. Those who are arrested and charged with DWI can expect harsh consequences if convicted.
